In the city, the New York Center for Autism Charter School Bronx is a sequel to a similar Harlem school. The Urban Assembly Charter School for Computer Science in the South Bronx will be the first computer science charter high school in the city and Brilla College Preparatory Charter School in Highbridge will use computer instruction for a quarter of classwork.

The schools plan to open next year. Currently, the Big Apple has 205 charters and another 15 are expected to open this year. Charter boosters hailed SUNY’s approval of the new privately run, publicly funded schools.

“New York’s charter schools are leading the way in finding unique and cutting-edge ways to educate children,” said Andrea Rogers, director of Northeast Charter Schools Network.
