Choosing a winner is easy in sports where the most points wins. But when it comes to cars and trucks, picking the best of the bunch requires careful analysis, vigorous debate, and a team of experts who know the car world inside and out.

This year, the Daily News Autos team took this assignment head-on, to determine the best cars, trucks and crossovers in 16 different vehicle categories. The voting included everything from electric cars to supercars, family sedans to SUVs, and sun-loving convertibles to cargo-hauling trucks.

“We created these awards to honor best-in-class vehicles for a wide range of consumers,” said Daily News Autos Editor NickKurczewski. “Our intent with these awards is to help consumers make a better choice for their next car purchase. We also wanted to have a little fun, so we included a Dream Machine category, because everyone loves to dream about what they could be driving.”

The Daily News Autos team of voters consisted of 9 automotive journalists with over 100 years of combined experience testing and reviewing cars all over the globe. From Baby Boomers to Millennials, this varied team of experts chose the car or truck that best represents the ‘automotive DNA’ of their respective segment.

Sure, most economy cars are great when it comes to fuel mileage. But which ones add a dose of style, clever cargo solutions, or even some driving excitement into the mix? Balancing the needs of today’s car buyer with the demands of a car enthusiast is an integral part to the one-of-a-kind nature of the Daily News Autos Awards.

“Our categories reflect the proven interests of our growing audience,” said Kurczewski. “The majority of our selections are priced below $50,000 and are fun to drive, while exceeding the standards of success within their respective automotive category.”
