Duchess of Cambridge refuses to heed the Queen

It's her royal tour of India and Bhutan, so Kate Middleton will wear wedges and forgo hem weights if she wants to. Thank you very much.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, 34, has never been a slave to fashion like her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, and her wardrobe from her fourth royal tour with husband Prince William reinforces that very idea.

For the first day of the royal tour on April 10, Kate Middleton wore a bright red paisley patterned, peplum Alexander McQueen dress to lay a wreath with husband Prince William at a memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, where 31 victims of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks were killed. She paired the look with a gold Russell & Bromley clutch and swapped her favourite rounded toe nude L.K. Bennett heels, for points by Gianvito Rossi. Click for more photos

The mother of two wants everyone to know she is more than the cloth on her back, with understated, modest looks for her seven-day diplomatic visit to keep the focus on those she is visiting, including female acid attack victims, impoverished street children in shelters, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kate, a well-known creature of habit, couldn't care less about the "you can only wear something once rule" as she brushes off her favourite, comfortable, nude L. K. Bennett heels and wedges. Queen Elizabeth II's reported disdainfor wedge shoes is also of zero concern to Kate as she's worn her go-to shoe style on three occasions in four days.

The princess is a woman who clearly knows her own mind and has also not heeded the Queen's advice on adding hem weights to prevent Marilyn Monroe moments. A gust of pesky, warm Indian wind almost revealed a tad too much on Monday as she laid a wreath to remember war victims.

The no-nonsense Queen has lead weights (that will set you back just a few dollars for a packet of four) sewn in her hemlines, so to avoid any dreaded wardrobe malfunctions.

Keeping everyone happy seems to be priority for Kate and her trusty stylists by mixing affordable high-street fashion with high-end British and Indian designers.

She has given numerous nods to Indian culture, particularly with her electric blue embellished sari-like gown for a gala dinner on Monday night even though it did draw some ire for being designed by a Brit in Jenny Packham, over a local.

Her bespoke, paisley-patterned, peplum red dress by Alexander McQueen has been her boldest look of the tour so far, but there is still time for her to pull a Diana and try something a little bit more fresh and modern.
