With the compact X3 crossover SUV, BMW emphasizes paved-road performance over dirt-trail ruggedness, which is as it should be for a vehicle wearing the iconic blue-and-white propeller badge. Following a significant mid-life update in 2015, BMW makes few changes to the 2016 X3 lineup.

Changes for 2016

• The xDrive35i models get a standard Harman Kardon premium surround sound system

• Prices are reduced for Driver Assistance Plus and Technology option packages, and for the navigation system

• Concierge Services now offered solely through BMW’s ConnectedDrive store

BMW X3 Highlights

When you decide to buy a BMW X3, you’ve got a few decisions to make. First, you need to determine whether or not you want the company’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Then you’ll need to choose between a turbocharged 4-cylinder gas, turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel, or turbocharged 6-cylinder gas engine, each equipped with automatic engine stop/start technology and an 8-speed automatic transmission with a Sport driving mode.

Finally, you’ll determine if you want the standard, M Sport, or xLine appearance package.

Once these major selections are made, you can tailor the X3 through various paint, interior color, and interior trim options. Option packages install additional equipment related to comfort, safety, infotainment, and convenience, and BMW offers a handful of separate options for the X3. Needless to say, prices rise quickly.

Metallic paint, leather upholstery, and a reversing camera are optional, and the Technology option package contains a navigation system, BMW Online, and BMW Apps systems. A blind spot monitoring system is included in the Driver Assistance Plus option package.

Separately, a dynamic radar cruise control system is available, and includes Active Driving Assistant technologies including forward collision warning with low-speed automatic braking and pedestrian detection capability, as well as a lane departure warning system.
