In its first full year on the market, the new Porsche Macan is the automaker’s second best-selling model in the U.S. after the Cayenne. Indeed, Americans are crazy for crossovers. For 2016, a new Macan GTS joins the lineup, mixing and matching equipment from the S and Turbo models to plug a significant price gap between the two.

Changes for 2016

• New GTS model joins lineup

• GTS receives SportDesign appearance, special interior detailing, a more powerful engine, a sport exhaust system, a different suspension, altered stability control, 20-inch wheels, larger brakes, and more

• Optional Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi capable rear seat entertainment system, surround view camera system (added during 2015 production run)

2016 Macan Highlights

For 2016, the Porsche Macan is offered in S, GTS, and Turbo trim levels. No matter which version you choose, rest assured that this 5-passenger, compact crossover SUV will be focused on performance. Just keep in mind that four occupants will be much happier, and that you can’t carry more than 17.7 cu.-ft. of luggage behind the 40/20/40-split rear seat or 53 cu.-ft. of stuff with the rear seat folded down.

Macan S models have a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 engine generating 340 horsepower between 5,500 rpm and 6,500 rpm, and 339 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,450 rpm and 5,000 rpm. A 7-speed automated manual gearbox is standard equipment, and the Macan is equipped with an all-wheel drive system. Automatic engine stop/start technology and a coasting feature are designed to improve fuel economy, which measures 19 mpg in combined driving.

According to Porsche, the Macan S accelerates to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and tops out at 156 mph. A Sport Chrono Package enhances acceleration, or buyers can upgrade to the new Macan GTS, which extracts more power from the twin-turbo V6 while mixing and matching various mechanical components from the Macan S and the Macan Turbo.

In the GTS, horsepower measures 360 at 6,000 rpm and 369 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,650 rpm to 4,000 rpm. Note how the torque spread is not as broad as the Macan S? You might want to just get the Macan S with the Sport Chrono Package, which matches the GTS model’s sprint to 60 mph at five seconds flat. The GTS is slightly faster in terms of top speed, just in case you’re planning a run down Interstate 10 with the pedal to the metal.

Macan Turbo models also have a twin-turbocharged V6, but in this model is displaces 3.6 liters. Acceleration to 60 mph takes a maximum of 4.4 seconds, thanks to 400 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 406 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,350 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Top speed is 164 mph, and this version of the Macan is also rated to get 19 mpg in combined driving.

Like any Porsche, the Macan can be tailored to specific preferences through a wide selection of colors, trim, leathers, and wheels. Numerous options are also available, depending on which version of the SUV you choose, allowing a base price of just over $55,000 to inflate well beyond the $100,000 mark.
