This Saturday, if you are at Bandra and are tempted to buy a cake, then we suggest you visit the Bake Collective outside Al’s Tattoo Studio at Hill Road. The cakes are good, so say the tasters. They could be or not be the same price as some of the more famous cake shops; but more importantly, the money you spend on these goodies will be used to provide nourishment to children suffering from cancer.
All for a good cause
This initiative, which takes place at least thrice a year, is the brainchild of Bandra residents Kavita Gonsalves and Charlene Vaz . Kavita moved to Bangalore and is now heading the Bangalore chapter along with Simran Oberoi. While talking to dna about the initiative, Charlene said, “I always enjoyed baking, but couldn’t do it as a full-time operation because of health-conscious friends and diabetic family members. I then decided to bake and raise money for a cause,” she told dna.
Initially, Vaz researched on the smaller NGOs that required funding for a particular cause. But after the first few Bake Collectives, NGOs started contacting her. “I did my research before associating myself with them,” she added.
This time around, the Bake Collective is teaming up with Lower Parel-based NGO Cuddles to raise money for children suffering from cancer. Through the initiative, one month’s ration (worth Rs. 1,500) will be provided to 40 families, who have relocated to Mumbai to treat their cancer-affected children.
Why you should care
According to the numbers on the Cuddles website, 50,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in India every year. Only 22 per cent of these even make it to the hospital for treatment. “Only 2 out of 10 children survive, compared to worldwide survival rates of 8 out of 10. Statistics also show that 4 out of 10 children being treated lose the fight because of malnutrition,” the website says.
So, if you’re around Bandra this weekend, do check out the Bake Collective. If you’re not, don’t fret. You can still donate here: https://milaap.org/campaigns/nutrition4cancerchildren
