The pair have three children, Violet (born in 2005), Seraphina (born in 2009) and Samuel (born in 2012).
Affleck and Garner met on the set of Pearl Harbor , in 2001, and later on the set of Daredevil , in 2003.
They were married in a private ceremony on the Caribbean island of Turks and Caicos.
The ceremony was officiated by Garner's co-star on the television series Alias , actor Victor Garber.
Affleck is best known for breaking into Hollywood as the co-writer of Good Will Hunting .
He and childhood friend Matt Damon won the Oscar for best original screenplay for their work on the project.
Affleck later won the Golden Globe and BAFTA for best director for his work on Argo in 2012.
"I want to thank you for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases. It's good. It is work but the best kind of work and there's no one I'd rather work with," Affleck said while accepting the Oscar for Argoin 2013. "You have to work harder than you think you possibly can. It's hard. But you can't hold grudges. And it doesn't matter if you get knocked down in life. All that matters is that you gotta get back up."
Responding to the speech, Garner told the Telegraph: "I know Ben, I knew he meant it as the hugest, warmest compliment in the world. I think he was saying, 'Look, what we have is really real and I value it above all and I'm in it with you and I know you are in it with me.' That's the way I took it."
In a separate, earlier interview, Garner told Marie Claire: "I don't know what makes it work. But it does," she said of their relationship.
"One thing that makes it work is that we're both pretty nice. He's not someone who's ever going to blow up on anyone. What I mean is, if he's ever angry with me, he doesn't act out on it in a weird way or yell at me. And I am the same. So we handle conflict in a very loving and adult way."
Affleck is currently filming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , in which he will star as a Batman.
Garner gained her fame playing CIA officer Sydney Bristow in the television thriller Alias .
More recently she starred in the film Dallas Buyers Club .
In an earlier relationship, Affleck was one half of the so-called "Bennifer", with singer Jennifer Lopez.
The couple were considered the first "supercouple" of the social media age.
They were among the first celebrity couples to be referred to using a portmanteau of their names; others included "Brangelina" (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) and "TomKat" (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes).
