(Varun Dhawan and Captain America)
Why would anyone choose Varun Dhawan to voice Captain America?
Not just happy with showering us with mediocrity throughout the year, Bollywood now seems hell-bent on ruining Hollywood classics as well. On Sunday, we learned that Varun ‘I can hardly say a line properly’ Dhawan will be dubbing as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the new Civil War movie.
I mean seriously, which studio head thought that Varun Dhawan’s voice has the gravitas and honestly needed to pull off Steve Rogers? Till now, Sanket Mhatre, a veteran of the dubbing industry, who has dubbed for actors like Ryan Reynolds, Matt Damon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was doing Captain America’s voice in every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also voiced Wade Wilson in the Deadpool movie and he sounded a lot like the real thing.
I wondered if I was the only one who was upset with Varun Dhawan's choice but comments on YT video suggest otherwise. The moment Marvel launched the Hindi trailer, YouTube commentspiled up lamenting the choice and demanding the return of Sanket Mhatre:
Joy Parmar: Bring back Sanket. or I'll watch it in English -_-
Chirag patel: sanket malhtre rocks..this dubbing sucks as karela
Shradheay Singh: not watching my dream movie in hindi even if it does not release in english man its AWFUL man UTV does such good with the jungle book man varun is awful but who is doing iron man voice he is the biggest AWFUL UTV AWFUL
Rujan Shaikh: Lol :P Varun dhawan Yaar pehle waala accha tha
AKVIDEO EDITING: varun dhawan is totatlly suck... bring old captain voice back.... old one is the best voice of captain america..
bhavya Srivastava: please bring old cris Evans voice back
Jaskaran Meho17: yr why varun , his voice doesn't even match at any place.
Check out Mhatre's dubbing as Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool:
Mhatre’s ouster, is more than anything, symbolic of the nepotism that runs in Bollywood. Star kids have often blocked the entry of talented actors into Bollywood, for time immemorial as filmmakers try hard to convince us that we should be churning out our hard-earned money to watch the likes of Tiger Shroff and Sooraj Pancholi ham it on screen.
Sorry, but I still haven’t got over last year’s Filmfare best debut award (I’d love to understand the rationale of the individual who thought that Sooraj Pancholi deserved the award over Vicky Kaushal in Masaan ).
The current lot are so horrible that they actually make us miss Bobby Deol, who at least had an iota of charisma. And now it seems like the star kids aren’t just happy, blocking the path of talented newcomers but also voice-dubbing artists.
Of course, it’s not Varun Dhawan’s fault but of the studio head or executive who thought that Dhawan was a fit choice for Captain America. And it’s a sad day when actors with pretty faces start getting picked ahead of industry veterans for a role that doesn’t even fit them.
