Billy Ray Cyrus returns to TV as washed-up singer

Billy Ray Cyrus plays a washed-up singer in CMT’s new comedy.

The show, “Still the King,” premieres June 12, and the station dropped the first trailer for the sitcom Thursday.

Cyrus stars as Vernon, who had no idea he had a daughter — for whom he owes 15 years of child support — and no job prospects. He’s so broke, he’s 23 cents short for a can of beer.

He’s also a little short in the ethics department, as he pretends to be a preacher. But Vernon does it for the right reason — he’s trying to earn money to pay off his debt so he can spend time with his daughter.

He lands a gig as an Elvis impersonator.

The cast includes Joey Lauren Adams as his ex, and Madison Iseman as his daughter.

Lacey Chabert, Leslie David Baker, Kevin Farley, Travis Nicholson and Jon Sewell are also on the show.

Though Cyrus, 55, acted in “Sharknado 2: The Second One” and “90210,” he was best known in recent years on TV playing dad to his real life daughter, Miley Cyrus, in “Hannah Montana” from 2006 to 2011.
